More and more people are turning away from traditional employment and moving toward establishing a career from their homes. The advent of the Internet and other forms of technology, such as fax machines, have made it possible for entrepreneurs to run entire businesses out of their homes without ever hiring a single employee.
Working from home presents challenges, though. It takes a lot of dedication and willpower to ensure you complete the work you need to do on a daily basis. And, if you’re starting your own business from home, it also takes a lot of hard work to get things up and running–let alone profitable. Furthermore, home-based businesses do run a fairly high risk of failure unless the person has the right attitude and great work ethic.
That said, it might not be difficult to see why so many people are eager to work from home. There are a number of really fantastic reasons for working from home.
One of the most obvious benefits is the ability to make your own schedule. When you work from home, you choose the hours you want to work. This is even the case for most work-from-home jobs that involve a more traditional employer/employee relationship. There’s nothing quite like being able to take a couple of hours to meet your child in the school cafeteria for lunch or just to take a walk in the middle of a bright, sunny day.
Schedule freedom also lets you participate in volunteer or community activities that are impossible when you’re tied to a nine-to-five schedule. And, participating in these types of activities can really help you to further build your business since it gives you a chance to talk with people who just might be interested in what your business has to offer.
Working from home is also an excellent way for families to save money on day care costs. No, I’m not saying it’s easy to work with children under your feet. And, working from home when you have very young children can be a real challenge. However, since you can set your own schedule, you can work when the children are napping, away at school, or occupied in some other way.
When you’re your own boss, you avoid all the office politics that typically take place in office buildings. There’s no gossip going on around your water cooler because you’re the only one there! There’s also no need to worry about the security of your job; your job is absolutely secure as long as you continue to put in the necessary work to keep your business running successfully.
The dress code in your home office is pretty loose, too! There’s no need to spend hundreds of dollars on work clothes, because you, your kids, and your pets are the only ones who would see them anyway, and I’m willing to bet that your kids and pets don’t care how you’re dressed. So, spend your workday in your jogging pants and t-shirt and work comfortably.
And then, of course, there’s the money! When you run your own business, all the profits are yours and yours alone. (Okay, you will have to give Uncle Sam his fair share.) You’re not doing $ 50 worth of work in an hour and getting only a set hourly rate of $ 10 while someone else pockets the rest. Actually, there are some kinds of online businesses that, once they’re up and running, require only a small amount of time each day while they rake in some really great money.
Given the many benefits of working from home, it’s surprising more people don’t abandon the grind of traditional employment and take up doing something they love in a place where they love to do it–home!
